Quilting Tour
A note from our Tour Director:
After 15 years of taking tours to the USA and around the world. The Quilting Tour USA 2009 is now imminent. I am looking forward to sharing some of my favourite places with you.
This tour is a great balance of quilting, starting with the quilt festival in Paducah, with fabulous homes to inspect, meeting interesting and talented people, exciting cities, quaint villages and fabulous scenery both in the Amish country of Indiana and the magnificent scenery of the rugged coast of Maine into Prince Edward Island & finishing in Nova Scotia.
Day 1 – Wednesday 22 April
Depart Sydney flying Qantas Airways to Paducah, Kentucky
Day 2 – Wednesday 22 April
Arrive Paducah for 4 nights
Day 3 – Thursday 23 April
Paducah Quilt Festival B
Day 4 – Friday 24 April
Paducah Quilt Festival
Enjoy the history and culture of Paducah including an antique quilt show, The National Quilt Museum B
Day 5 – Saturday 25 April
Paducah Quilt Festival B
Visit Hancock’s Quilt Store
Day 6 – Sunday 26 April
Fly to Chicago transfers to Amish area, Indiana 4 nights B
Day 7 – Monday 27 April
Visit The Old Bag Factory Goshen, the building rich in history is an exciting market place and a centre of creativity. Visit Shirley and Dave Shenk ‘s quaint 1837 log cabin quilt showroom to see and hear about her fabulous quilt designs. Shirley’s trademarked patterns are showcased throughout North America. BD
Day 8- Tuesday 28 April
Visit Amish Acres in Nappanee to learn about the Amish Lifestyle. In the evening visit the Amish Acres Theatre to enjoy a live show. BD
Day 9 – Wednesday 29 April
Continue our Amish experience visiting the Amish towns of Shipshewana, Elkhart and Middlebury enjoying Farmers Markets, old barns stacked with antiques and collectables.
Must do; is to try the famous Amish dessert ‘Shoofly Pie’ BD News just in an exclusive hands-on quilt exhibition (wearing gloves, of course) will be extended to next year. These quilts will then be packed away again for many years
Day 10 – Thursday 30 April
Today we fly to New York via Chicago and a short city tour glimpse of this exciting city. 3 nights B
Day 11 – Friday 1 May
A day of exploring New York with a local guide An opportunity to attend a New York Theatre Show B
Day 12 – Saturday 2 May
A free day to explore the shops, galleries and museums in New York. B
Day 13 – Sunday 3 May
Depart for Newport, Rhode Island to visit 2 Rhode Is mansions before continuing to Hyannis 2 nights B
Day 14 – Monday 4 May
Early morning hydrofoil to Nantucket Island. Morning tour of the island with a local guide visiting the whaling museum to learn about the history of the island, also the famous Nantucket basket.
Lunch in the quaint village of Nantucket and free time to explore the wonderful village atmosphere before returning to Hyannis. BL
Day 15 – Tuesday 5 May
Drive to Boston for lunch at Faneuil Hall Market Place, In the afternoon we visit New England Quilt Museum Lowell, 2 nights
BDDay 16 – Wednesday 6 May
This morning we visit the Shaker Village, Canterbury to learn about the early Shaker religion and lifestyle. After lunch we will visit Keepsake Quilters Showroom for another little quilt indulgence LD
Day 17 – Thursday 7 May
To Ogunquit, Maine for lunch, before we begin our journey along the spectacular Maine coast towards Canada - An opportunity to visit an outlet store en-route to overnight at the pretty little town of Camden 1 night LD
Day 18 – Friday 8 May
Continuing our journey north, we visit Bar Harbour and Acadia National Park, then on to the border town of St Andrews for the night.1 night BD
Day 19 – Saturday 9 May
Today we drive from St Andrews to Prince Edward Is via the Confederation Bridge which is 13kms long. The next 2 nights we stay in Charlottetown. BD
Day 20 – Sunday 10 May
Today we tour pretty Prince Edward Is visiting Cavendish and surrounds where LM Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables story was taken. BD
Day 21 – Monday 11 May
Today we take the ferry to Nova Scotia and the scenic drive to Baddeck and Sydney 1 night BD
Day 22 – Tuesday 12 May
Traveling to Halifax enjoying more of the beautiful scenery of Nova Scotia 2 nights BD
Day 23 – Wednesday 13 May
We travel the Lighthouse Route to visit Peggy’s Cove, Malone Bay and Lunenburg enjoying quaint fisherman’s homes and shops BD
Day 24 – Thursday 14 May
Depart Halifax, New York BD
Day 25 – In Air
Day 26 – Arrive Sydney
